Public Library Director Reports Growth in Circulation and Programming
At the August Caldwell County Board of Commissioners Meeting, Public Library Director Janet Fore reported significant increases in circulation and programming.
In 2018, the library set two goals: reaching 300,000 annual checkouts and expanding programming. After a brief setback during the COVID 19 pandemic, circulation rebounded, reaching 300,000 in 2023 and 349,000 in 2025. Teen circulation continues to rise as well, posting double digit growth for four consecutive years despite nationwide declines.
Programming has grown significantly since 2018, when the library offered eight teen programs during the summer. This year, the three branches provided 42 teen programs, a 425% increase. Children’s and adult programs also expanded to include Opportunity for All sessions for adults with disabilities, three active adult book clubs, and a thriving Dungeons & Dragons group for teens. Younger children enjoy story times, STEM activities, art, and “Read with Abby,” a therapy dog reading program.
Summer Reading participation reached new highs. This year, 1,191 children recorded 651,195 minutes of reading and received 1,374 prize books. Teens returned 108 reading log bookmarks, and 54 adults completed the Bookology challenge, reading 594 books.
Community support remains a core service. Staff regularly helps people find needed resources, prints documentation to help people with securing funding to pay electric bill, assists with technology, and prepares teens for DMV visits.
“Each milestone reflects the dedication of our staff and the trust our community places in its libraries,” said Public Library Director Janet Fore. “We are proud to see our circulation, programs, and outreach expand, and we’re committed to meeting the needs of every patron who walks through our doors.”
