Heather Shull Named First Recipient of Clay County Safety Star Award
Clay County has named Heather Shull the first recipient of its new Safety Star Award, recognizing employees who identify potential hazards, take action and help create a safer workplace and community.
In fact, Shull’s actions helped serve as the catalyst for creating the new recognition program.
On September 17, Shull experienced what she believed could be an attempt to compromise her computer. Recognizing that something did not seem right, she immediately locked her computer and contacted Clay County’s Information Technology Department.
Fortunately, IT determined that her computer had not been compromised. However, staff praised Shull for responding exactly as employees should when they encounter suspicious computer activity.
Shull then took the experience one step further by sharing it with Risk Management and suggesting it could become a training opportunity for other County employees.
With October recognized as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the idea provided an opportunity for Clay County to organize an interactive Lunch & Learn with County employees and IT staff. The session will cover current phishing campaigns being reported, computer security best practices and give employees the opportunity to ask questions directly to the County’s IT team.
The experience also highlighted the growing emphasis on safety and risk mitigation throughout Clay County and inspired the creation of the Safety Star Award.
The award recognizes employees who notice a potential hazard, speak up and take steps to make Clay County safer for fellow employees, their families, residents and businesses.
Safety does not always come down to one major event. Often, it begins with employees remaining aware of their surroundings, recognizing potential risks and taking action when something does not seem right. A seemingly small moment can ultimately have a much larger impact — and those are the moments Clay County hopes to recognize and celebrate through the Safety Star Award.
Congratulations to Heather Shull on becoming Clay County’s first Safety Star Award recipient and for helping turn one safety-conscious decision into an opportunity to benefit employees across the organization.
